A Historic Event when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"He is a top coach who knows football intimately, and that's the most important thing.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's first black footballer, I would be lying if I said this news fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club named Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new manager following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

There have been a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding individuals holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game locally, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe a figure like Rosenior managing their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a household that champions equality… that's powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for the club, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour across English football corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023 report, 43% of top-flight footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, based on data from 11 clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become one of only four permanent English head coaches currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other big five leagues in terms of national managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's really inspirational to young English academy coaches to see someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

It is vital to remember – he's there on merit'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career culminating in a brief stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he received an MBE in the Honours List for services rendered in combating inequality in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He also made a point he has often stated: that significant under-representation leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a staff member make a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues.

The Blues had the Premier League's pioneering black boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
